THE TECH BRIEF / MOBILE

Before you buy phone accessories.

A great accessory is only useful if it fits your device and routine. Small checks before buying prevent common compatibility surprises.

1. Verify your exact device model

Phones with similar names may differ in dimensions, camera layout, button placement or connector position. Look up your exact model in the device settings or on the manufacturer's product information before choosing a case, screen protector or mount.

2. Match the connector, not only the shape

Two cables with similar connectors can support different charging power or data functions. Check the accessory's stated capabilities and compare them with the phone and charger specifications. USB-C is a connector shape; supported features still vary.

3. Cases and screen protectors need precise fit

Confirm which phone model and generation the manufacturer lists. Review the camera and screen cutouts, case thickness and whether the protector is intended to work with your chosen case.

4. Check how mounts attach

For car or desk mounts, look at the actual mounting method, size limits, surface requirements and whether any magnetic attachment requires a compatible case or ring. A vague “universal” label is not a substitute for dimensions.

5. Use this shortlist before paying

  • Exact device model and generation
  • Physical dimensions or supported fit
  • Charging and data compatibility
  • Any extra component required
  • Manufacturer instructions and limitations
